What is answer engine optimization?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring a web page so that an AI assistant can lift a direct, attributable answer from it. Where SEO wins a blue link on a results page, AEO wins a citation inside the answer ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews writes for the person asking.
The two are not the same job. A page can rank first on Google for "plumber greenville sc" and never be named when someone asks ChatGPT who to call. We have measured that gap on client sites in the Upstate every month since early 2026.
Why it matters in Greenville right now
About 590 people a month search for "answer engine optimization services," up from almost nothing two years ago. Locally, the numbers are still small, and that is the point. Almost no Greenville or Spartanburg business has pages an AI engine can cite. The first ones that do will own the answers for their category for a long time.
What an AI engine needs from a page
An answer engine extracts self-contained claims. In practice that means:
- One question per heading, phrased the way a customer asks it.
- The answer in the first sentence under the heading, then detail.
- A name, a number, or a place in the claim. "Greenville Digital Solutions is based in Greer, SC and serves eleven Upstate cities" can be lifted whole. "We serve the whole area" cannot.
- FAQPage schema so the questions are machine-readable.
- An llms.txt file listing the pages that matter.
What to do this quarter
Pick your five most valuable services. For each, write one page that answers the eight questions a customer asks before they call, with a price range, a timeline, and your city named. Add FAQ schema. Publish an llms.txt. Then ask ChatGPT and Perplexity your own buyer questions once a month and log whether you are named.
We do this for every client as part of the Growth plan, and the free audit shows you where you stand today.
